La couche d’ozone est essentielle à l’existence de la vie sur Terre. Chargé entre autres de filtrer l’entrée du rayonnement ultraviolet sur notre planète, il s’est de plus en plus dégradé ces dernières décennies avec le réchauffement climatique. Mais à quoi ressemblerait notre monde sans cette couche ?
Une étude récente tente d’expliquer cela. Les chercheurs ont utilisé un modèle du climat terrestre qui décrit comment cet équilibre peut être influencé par différentes compositions atmosphériques. Lorsque la quantité d’ozone a été réduite à presque zéro, la température a chuté de 3,5 °C, très similaire au climat de la dernière période glaciaire. La seule condition dans ce modèle est que le niveau de dioxyde de carbone reste le même qu’aujourd’hui.
Mais si la planète serait plus froide sans ozone, pourquoi n’est-elle pas le grand méchant du changement climatique ?

Lorsque le Soleil frappe la surface de la Terre, l’océan et la terre absorbent une partie de la chaleur et le reste est renvoyé, mais la composition de l’atmosphère affecte la quantité de celle-ci qui retourne dans l’espace. L’ozone est comme un polluant piégeant la chaleur dans la Terre, mais ses effets positifs ou négatifs dépendent de l’endroit où il se trouve.
- Dans la couche d’ozone, dans la stratosphère, à une altitude d’environ 50 kilomètres, il protège la planète des rayons ultraviolets ;
- A 20 kilomètres d’altitude, il absorbe la chaleur et fonctionne pleinement comme un gaz à effet de serre ;
- Un peu plus bas c’est super utile pour détruire les gaz polluants ;
- Au niveau du sol, il joue un rôle dans la formation de la pollution de l’air.
De plus, même si sans ozone la planète serait plus froide, il existe des gaz encore pires. Les chlorofluorocarbures, par exemple, l’un des principaux destructeurs de l’ozonosphère, sont des dizaines de milliers de fois plus polluants et si nous ne les avions pas interdits en 1987 pour sauver la couche d’O₃, la crise climatique pourrait aujourd’hui être bien pire.
