Selon les informations d'IFL Science, c'est le terme que les scientifiques ont choisi pour nommer l'acte de locomotion du poisson-chat blindé lorsqu'il se fraye un chemin à travers des environnements désertiques à la recherche de ressources. Ce serait quelque chose de similaire à marcher et se tordre, cependant, aucun des deux mots ne semblait correct pour nommer l'action. C’est alors que les experts ont estimé que la façon dont ce poisson se déplaçait méritait sa propre parole.

Les situations dans lesquelles le poisson-chat blindé se trouve à la recherche de ressources terrestres se produisent généralement lorsque le poisson se trouve en dehors de son habitat naturel. Le manque de nourriture ou de ressources de base pour survivre motive également ce mouvement particulier.
- Cette espèce de poisson-chat appartient à un groupe de poissons très diversifié que l'on trouve en Amérique centrale et en Amérique du Sud ;
- Leur morphologie très spécialisée leur permet d'habiter les milieux aquatiques et terrestres sans mourir ;
- L’acte de marcher sur terre n’est pas facile à réaliser pour eux. L’aspect « tortillé » est donc visible lors de l’acte de locomotion.
Une étude réalisée en 2021 a initialement introduit le terme « reefling ». La recherche a analysé le comportement du poisson-chat blindé et, à l’époque, a conclu que les termes utilisés pour décrire les actions terrestres de ces espèces étaient inexacts ou nécessitaient une meilleure description.
